If you cannot relate to your students even in your L1, how can you expect to do that in a language that you are not comfortable with?
どの言語でやる云々より、まずはキャッチボールをしないとあとはすべてダメになる。
What matters is not which language you use but whether or not you are really communicating-- interacting with your students in a flexible, adaptive manner. Without that, whatever else you do will be of no avail.
