Don't be afraid of making mistakes.... say a lot of people, without thinking much about what it means.  If you think the statement means that there is no need to try to avoid mistakes or that you do not have to make efforts not to make the same mistake again, then you are terribly misguided.   Mistakes and errors are to be learned from, not to be disregarded or forgotten.

Why not stop complaining some of your students write a "b" for a "d" or vice versa?  Why do you think it's such a big deal? That's because you pay too much attention to letters, as opposed to sounds.  Time will take care of such a minute mistake.   Instead of making a fuss about nothing, take good care to see that your students can learn to distinguish between /b/ and /v/, /f/ and /w/, etc, which is far more important.

As an English teacher, speak fluently but slowly.  When you listen to your students speak in English, always pay attention to both form and meaning, and be ready to intervene whenever the form is less than satisfactory.  If you just listen to the message, you are no different from someone on the street.  You are getting paid to coach your students.

Never waste your and your students' precious class time by organizing an internet chat session or the like for them in class.  They are free to communicate outside the classroom.  An English class is not a place for that.  It is a place for preparation, not the real thing.   You can't coach them in the real thing, can you?

At least at junior and senior high schools levels in Japan, timed or speeded activities do more harm than good, and hence should not be attempted in principle.  With students lacking automatized articulation skills, what those activities do is make them fail to stick to the barely emerging desirable habit of pronouncing properly and revert to the good (well, bad) old habit of speaking garbage Japalish.

Never pursue fluency prematurely.  Fluency will take care of itself, in time, when accuracy is established.

関係代名詞は弱く言え

英語教師、文アクセント(文の中でどの単語が強く読まれて、どの単語が弱く読まれるのか)を知らなすぎる。大間違いをひとつだけ指摘すると、関係詞を強く音読するひとが多いが、大間違い。

Tom was the one who was lying.

の whoは強く言ってはだめ。

しかし、

I can't tell who is lying.

のwhoは強く言わなくてはダメ。

関係代名詞を導入する中学段階でも教えておかないと、聞いていて誤解(関係代名詞が疑問代名詞に聞こえる)も招くから、極めて重要なポイントだが、「重要事項」だから強調するあまり、強くはっきり読んで導入し、それがそのまま英語人生に定着している、人が多い。

As an EFL teacher, you need to be much more careful about which words in a sentence (or utterance) should be and should not be stressed, which as long as I know is rarely paid attention to.  A typical mistake is to pronounce a relative pronoun strongly, like "who" in "Tom was the one who was lying."

I always carry around a plastic hammer in class, which I use for banging (or pickon-ing) students on their head the moment they make a careless mistake in pronunciation or grammar or whatever. Never listen to someone who says that you should not correct students' errors when they are speaking. Do correct each and every mistake they make. That's what teachers are for, in the first place.

World Englishes

sit = shit
very = berry = belly
first = fast
with = wiz
bought = boat
love = rub

という英語を指すならば。

Listening to "World Englishes" only reinforces my conviction that default Japanese English is not good enough to be counted as one of the legitimate English variants. Japanese and Korean learners of English are in a disadvantageous position to start with because of the fact that their native language lacks the distinction between /r/ and /l/, which means that they need to make efforts that native speakers of the other languages do not have to. That is unfair, to be sure, but life is not fair.

歌の威力

やっぱり、歌はよい。

日本語読みをしている=英語の歌が歌えない

英語読みをする=英語の歌が歌える

ことを実感させることができる。そしてその後に、教科書本文の読みでも同じだよ、ともっていくと、生徒の納得度が違う。

♪ I hate it when a guy doesn't get the door
oOoOoO OoOoO

♪ even though I told him yesterday and the day before
OoOoOoOoO OoOoO

をやってから、教科書の、

I feel that it taught me a lot も、 oOooOooO

で、3つしか文アクセントはないのだ、

という話をすると、納得される。

Making your students sing English songs can convince them that speaking English with the Japanese syllable-timed rhythm is no good and that, with regard to stress-timed rhythm, there is no difference between singing songs and vocalizing written texts.

The Best Damn Thing

今日の達成感: Avril Lavigne の The best damn thing が完璧に歌えるようになった。

Today I have a sense of achievement from learning to sing "The best damn thing" perfectly.

I'm the best damn thing that your eyes have ever seen!!

馬鹿か?(テストは翌日に返却だとよ...)

テストをいつ返そうが、返すまいが、生徒にガタガタいわれるスジはない。そんなことはまったくうどうでもいい。採点に時間がかかるのは、悪いことではないでしょ。テストは授業で授業はテスト。

It's none of your students' business when you return their test papers. Teaching is testing, and testing is teaching. Creating a test that takes some time to mark is nothing to be avoided; rather it can be evidence that the test is tapping some productive ability (like extended writing), which of course is a good thing.

Another disgusting episode: at a certain high school, distributing translation for the textbook materials is not allowed before, during, or even after class; the teacher is required to orally give out the translation for students to jot down in class.

What a stupid way of spending precious class time! I bet those who set up such nonsensical rules cannot score 900 in TOEIC, pass STEP 1st, give an extended speech in English, or write an essay. In a nutshell, those teachers cannot use the language!!

They prevent promising young teachers to give effective classes and force their students to make futile efforts simply because they do NOT understand themselves what being able to use the language is about. Preposterous! You don't need to be a rocket scientist to see that unless students are encouraged to retain English, not Japanese, in their long-term memory after class, they will never acquire the command of English.

Why are they so, so stupid??

Should an English class be conducted in English? The answer to this question varys according to who is asking. To those who do not think they are able to conduct a 50-minute session in English, I say to you that your priority is to enhance your speaking skills to the extent that you can comfortably conduct any activity using English, from grammatical explanation to reading between the lines. On the other hand, to those who CAN do everything in English if necessary, I would say that they should think about how to make their students do everything in English, rather than how to do so themselves.

酸っぱいブドウだろ、そりゃ

"cry sour grapes" = say that something is not good or important simply because you cannot get it

This expression originated from the Aesop's fable "The Fox and the Grapes" (see http://www.bartleby.com/17/1/31.html).

用例1: Taro says having high TOEIC scores doesn't mean anything when teaching English, but I cannot help feeling that's just sour grapes.

用例2: Hanako says there's nothing wrong, in this day and age, with speaking English with heavy Japanese accent, but I suspect she's crying sour grapes.

音読できない生徒のリーディングは無意味だろ

その気になれば、きちんと音読できるが、いちいち音読せずに、黙読する学習者の「リーディング」には意味があるが、まともに音読できない生徒が、「読解」しても、英語力の向上にはならない。だから音読をしない「リーディング」授業をする学年になる前に、まともに文字を音声化できるスキルをつけてやるのが教師のつとめである。しかし、読解だって、英語によるやりとりによって進めるならば、音声が飛び交うよ。

If a learner cannot read aloud a text properly, there is no point in having him try to read it silently. Silently reading a text that one cannot properly read aloud is not a language behavior but crypt analysis. Therefore, it is your job to provide your students with the ability to read aloud English properly before they take a "reading" class. However, if you conduct your "reading" class in English, checking students comprehension, explaining the meanings of the text, having students making comments, etc., all in English, your "reading" class will not be very different from a speaking class, anyway.

授業は楽しいな

本当にいつも、いつも授業は最高に楽しいな。全員の目がこっちを向いて、必死に何かを身に付けようと口を動かして...

I truly love every minute of teaching students in class. Each and every of them staring at me, watching me, moving their mouth imitating me, desperately trying to acquire new skills ... I'm a lucky guy getting paid for doing what I love the most in my life.
