科研費プロジェクトに関連して２度目のソウル訪問をした。今回はソウル市内の公立高校を２校訪問し、テスト問題の写しをいただき、授業を視察し、韓国英語教育の現状について話を聞く機会を得た。
まず、前回と同様の感想だが...
英語がうまい！
発音はほとんど問題ない( major の破擦音 j が摩擦音になってしまうくらい）。語彙は豊富。流暢である。
しかし、いろいろな学会にいって日本人英語教師が英語を話すのを聞くと「おいおい、ツッコミどころ満載じゃん」と思うばかりで、一方、韓国人英語教師が英語を話すをを聞くと「おいおい、やばいねこれ」と思うばかり、というのは危機感を抱かざるをえない状況だと思われる。
I visited Seoul for the second time in relation to the Kakenhi project to interview Korean English teachers at secondary schools, to collect photocopies of classroom tests conducted at those school, and to observe English classes. Just like in my last visit, I simply got impressed with the teachers' proficiency of English. Their pronunciation is near perfect for a non-native speaker, their vocabulary is large, and their fluency is awesome. Just as every time I listen to J-EFL teachers speak English, I am distracted by their sloppy pronunciation, every time I listen to K-EFL teachers speak English, I am struck with awe and wonder, "What's wrong with our system?"
