A とかBとかCとか、Fとか、ひとつひとつの文字のことを alphabet だと思っている教師がほとんどで困ったものだ。
おまけに文部科学省でつくっている文書の中でさえ、「アルファベット」を、やはりひとつひとつの文字をさして使っているように読める箇所があり、さらに困ったものである。
LDOCE によれば、 alphabet とは、
a set of letters, arranged in a particular order, and used in writing
とある。
よって、
The English alphabet consists of 26 letters.
The Japanese alphabet has 50 letters.
ということなのである。
The first letter in the English alphabet is A.
のように、ひとつひとつの文字は、あたりまえだが、letter である。
Japanese EFL teachers refer to each letter in the alphabet as "an alphabet," which is a mistake. A is not an alphabet. B is not an alphabet. They are the first letter, the second letter in the modern English alphabet, respectively.
